Posted on October 14th, by Mark Winter in North Bay Home Care, Sonoma Elder Care. No Comments

Gayle has been with Hired Hands since July 2012 and her favorite caregiver right now is Mary Martel. Gayle never had children or held an occupation. She and her late husband used to love hosting parties with friends and entertaining guests at their home in Santa Rosa. Gayle enjoys watching Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune; her favorite activities include walking in her neighborhood on nice days, conversing / reminiscing with her caregivers and weekly visits to the hair salon.

When Phyllis (Director of Santa Rosa office) and Jake (Santa Rosa Office Manager) arrived with cake and flowers, Gayle told them, “I’m so fortunate to have such wonderful people in my life. I am truly blessed!”

Should I Stay or Should I Go? Determining if Home Care Is an Option.

Posted on October 10th, by Mark Winter in Homecare, North Bay Home Care, Sonoma Elder Care. No Comments

We face a number of critical crossroads in life, in which our decisions will have a long-reaching impact. Our career. Whether (and whom) to marry. Whether to have children. And once we’ve reached senior status, another major decision looms: should we consider a move to an assisted living facility or nursing home to ensure we have the care needed throughout the aging process, or is home care in California an option?

As with any crucial decision, it’s important to carefully consider the pros and cons of each choice. Hired Hands Homecare wants to help seniors and their families more clearly understand both options, in order to make the decision with which they’ll be most comfortable.

If you’re in the beginning stages of considering a move for your senior loved one, these questions are important to consider:

Is cost a factor? The U.S. Department … Read More »

Hired Hands Homecare: Determining When Seniors with Dementia Should Give Up the Keys

Posted on September 8th, by Mark Winter in Aging, Dementia, Sonoma Elder Care. No Comments

Being able to get out of the house and go where we want on a whim is a freedom many of us have long enjoyed and may even take for granted. Driving represents much more than just a daily routine; it symbolizes both competence and independence. And, it can be an incredibly hard activity to give up.

The need for sustained concentration and quick reaction time tends to decline as we age, and for someone with Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia, this process accelerates dramatically, making it difficult for loved ones to know when it’s time for the senior to stop driving and find alternate transportation options.

The Warning Signs

Because Alzheimer’s disease has an impact on reasoning skills, your loved one may resist the idea of giving up driving, so it’s often up to family caregivers to determine when the … Read More »

Use Colors to Enhance Vision

Posted on March 25th, by Mark Winter in Sonoma Elder Care, Vision Issues. No Comments

Do you know someone dealing with vision loss? Being a caregiver to someone losing his or her vision can leave you feelings helpless, but it doesn’t have to. Many people don’t realize one of the easiest ways to help someone with vision loss is to utilize contrasting colors. Rearranging parts of a home utilizing colors more effectively can make it safer and allow for greater independence.

Here are some simple rules to remember regarding color and contrast for those with low vision:

Generally, solid, bright colors such as red, orange, and yellow are easiest to see because of their ability to reflect life.
Place light colored objects against darker backgrounds. For example, a white sheet of paper is more visible against a brown desktop.
Place dark objects against lighter backgrounds. A dark chair will stand out better against cream-colored walls.
Distinguishing colors within each of … Read More »

Small Adjustments Create Big Change

Posted on March 4th, by Mark Winter in Sonoma Elder Care, Vision Issues. No Comments

Our vision allows us to move through life with an ease we sometimes take for granted. It allows us to see the wonders of the world, the smiles on our loved ones’ faces, and to move through our day to day activities without a second thought. Vision keeps us independent and self-sufficient, and the idea of losing that ability can be unnerving and saddening.

Because of this, it is important to approach someone experiencing vision loss with care and consideration. Going through the home and making small adjustments can make a senior’s life much easier and allow for continued independence. A general rule of thumb when making home modifications for seniors with impaired vision is to pay special attention to the basic concepts of lighting, color and contrast. Try making a few of these small adjustments:

Lighting

Try to maintain continuous lighting levels … Read More »

Amazing Santa Rosa Senior Care Story

Posted on March 1st, by Mark Winter in Aging, Homecare, Sonoma Elder Care, Testimonials. No Comments

Jim had his second stroke at the age of 61.  It was devastating, but Jim was strong, was surrounded by family, and had a great sense of humor.  Jim was determined to “dive into the deep end” if that was what it would take to get his life back!

Jim’s wife approached Hired Hands in the Spring of 2015.  We would provide a broad range of services to assist Jim in his rehabilitation and recuperation.  Not only did we provide home care services at his home in Santa Rosa, but also at the Santa Rosa Junior College, where he attended conditioning and swimming classes, and speech therapy.   Quite a daily challenge, but Jim was determined… and making great progress!

Today, we received the following note.  After an amazing amount of hard work, Jim has overcome his obstacles, and regained his independence.  It has been … Read More »
